This checklist is a tool for you to use when you call or visit a child care program to see if it is the right place for your child.

Do you feel comfortable leaving your child here?
Will your child be happy?
Is there willingness for you to participate?
Can you make unannounced visits to the child care program?

Is it safe and clean both indoors and outdoors?
Is drinking water available and within a child’s reach?
Do staff and children wash their hands frequently?
Is medicine locked and out of reach of children?


Checkmark The Basics

What do the children do all day long?
What hours and days are they open?
What are the fees?
Are meals and snacks included?
How are behavior issues handled?
What happens when a child becomes ill?
Will the provider give you references?

Are children happy and relaxed?
Do children relate well to each other?
Are the children engaged in a range of activities?
Adults are at the child’s level when speaking to them?
Does the teacher attends to children who are upset?


Checkmark The Place

Is it bright and cheerful?
Are toys and equipment in child’s reach?
Are there enough toys for all children?
Is there space for active and quiet play?
Are meals served attractively?
Is the outdoor area shaded?
Is there outdoor play equipment?
Can a child nap quietly and comfortably?

 

Checkmark Nutrition

Is the development of good nutritional habits being promoted?
Are nutritious meals and snacks being provided?
Are fresh fruits and vegetables offered?
How are meals and snacks prepared and served?
Are there activities offered to teach the children the importance of proper nutrition and healthy eating habits?


Checkmark The Learning Environment

Are children allowed to choose activities?
Infants playing outside of their cribs?
Are activities appropriate for your child’s age?
Are children’s questions answered openly?
Are children enjoying activities?
Is a “Daily Schedule” posted?

Is there enough staff to give children individual attention?
Are they warm and friendly?
Do they listen and talk positively?
How long have they been there?
How much training do they have?
Do they understand how children learn and grow?
